The second is general-purpose shooting, plinking, drills, maybe a class or a match, out to a few hundred yards. The third is extended-range work, where you're stretching a 5.56 rifle out toward the edge of what the caliber and the shooter can actually do.
Buying by popularity, or by whatever optic your buddy runs, skips that step entirely. The same AR-15 lower can wear a $200 red dot or a $1,200 LPVO and be "correctly" set up either way, depending entirely on the job. A magnified scope on a bedside carbine adds weight and slows down a close shot for no real benefit. A bare red dot on a rifle you're shooting at 400 yards leaves you guessing at holdover with no way to confirm the hit.
Fit and feel matter here too, more than most first-time buyers expect. How an optic sits in your eye, how fast the dot or reticle shows up when you mount the rifle, whether the controls fall naturally under your thumb, none of that shows up on a spec sheet. Red dot sights: built for speed up close
A red dot puts a single illuminated dot on one flat plane of glass, with no magnification and no limit on eye relief. You can have your eye a foot off the optic or an inch away and the dot still lines up on target the same way. That's what makes a red dot the fastest option there is for close, fast target acquisition. There's no reticle to align, no crosshair to center. You look, the dot's on the target, you shoot.
That speed is exactly why a red dot is the default choice for home defense and close-quarters work inside about 100 yards. It also holds up well in low light, since the dot is internally illuminated rather than relying on ambient light the way a traditional scope reticle does.
The practical upsides stack in a red dot's favor too. They're light, they're cheaper than most magnified optics, and battery life on a decent model is measured in years, not weeks. The honest limit is precision at distance. Without magnification or a structured reticle to hold over with, a red dot at 200 or 300 yards turns a precise shot into an educated guess. Prism sights: a durable, astigmatism-friendly middle ground
A prism sight uses a reticle etched directly into the glass, set at a fixed low magnification, usually somewhere around 1x to 5x depending on the model. Because the reticle is physically etched rather than projected, it still works if the battery dies. You lose the illumination, not the sight picture.
The etched reticle also makes a prism tough in a way electronic dots aren't; there's less to break down under hard use. Shooters whose astigmatism blurs or distorts a red dot's glowing dot generally see a clean, sharp reticle through a prism, since it's glass and ink rather than a projected point of light.
Think of a prism as the compact middle step between a plain red dot and a full LPVO. It's more usable at mid-range than a bare dot, thanks to the built-in magnification, while staying smaller and simpler than a variable-power scope.
Fixed magnification means a prism is less flexible up close than a true 1x red dot, since you're always looking through some level of zoom rather than a flat, unmagnified window. And illuminated prism reticles generally run shorter battery life than a red dot, though the etched reticle underneath means a dead battery doesn't leave you blind the way it would on a pure electronic dot.
LPVOs: one optic that scales from 1x to distance
An LPVO, short for low-power variable optic, starts at roughly 1x and dials up to 4x, 6x, 8x, or 10x depending on the model. At the bottom of that range it works almost like a red dot, fast and close to true 1x. Dial it up and it turns into a genuine precision tool.
That range is what makes an LPVO the strongest single do-everything choice for general-purpose use out to about 400 yards. Higher top-end magnifications stretch identification and hits out further still, though the practical benefit tapers off for most shooters well before the glass runs out of zoom.
That top-end number should tie back to how far you actually shoot, not how far the rifle theoretically could reach. More magnification helps precision, but only if you're regularly shooting past a couple hundred yards. A 10x top end is wasted glass on a rifle that never leaves a 100-yard bay.
An LPVO isn't free of tradeoffs, either. It's heavier and pricier than a red dot or prism, it takes up more rail space, and it demands consistent eye relief, meaning your head position behind the rifle has to be more repeatable than it does with a red dot's forgiving eye box. And even dialed all the way down to 1x, an LPVO's speed still isn't quite as instant or natural as a true red dot's.
Caliber also sets a practical ceiling on how far magnification is worth chasing. Red dot and magnifier combos: speed now, reach when you need it
A dot-and-magnifier setup pairs a standard red dot with a flip-to-side magnifier mounted just behind it. Flip the magnifier out of the way and you're running a true 1x red dot. Flip it in line and you get roughly 3x of magnification on demand, without touching a zoom ring or re-aiming.
The practical advantage is that the magnifier comes off, or flips aside, without disturbing the dot's zero. Most of the time the rifle stays as light and fast as a plain red dot setup, and the extra reach is only there when a shot actually calls for it.
Compared fairly against an LPVO, the combo keeps the single fastest 1x you can get, since there's no glass or magnification sitting in front of your eye at all when the magnifier's flipped away. An LPVO gives up a little of that raw speed at 1x in exchange for winning clearly on precise, sustained shooting at distance, where a fixed 3x magnifier can't compete with 8x or 10x of dialed-in zoom.
A dot-and-magnifier combo has one real limit. It's built for fast hits inside a couple hundred yards, not for one precise shot much further out. If you're regularly shooting past 300 yards, the combo starts working against you instead of for you.
The optic specs worth understanding before you buy
A handful of terms show up on every optic listing, and knowing what they mean before you're standing at the counter saves a lot of guessing.
Dot and reticle size. MOA, short for minute of angle, works out to roughly one inch of coverage at 100 yards. A 2 MOA dot, a common middle ground, is small enough to hold precision at a few hundred yards but still big enough to find fast up close. Bigger dots (4 to 6 MOA) pick up faster at close range and cost you some precision further out.
First focal plane vs. second focal plane. On magnified optics, this determines whether the reticle's markings stay accurate as you zoom. A first focal plane (FFP) reticle grows and shrinks along with the magnification, so holdover marks read true at any power setting. A second focal plane (SFP) reticle stays the same physical size on the glass regardless of zoom, which means its holdover marks are only accurate at one specific magnification, usually the top end. Battery and reliability. Features like shake-awake motion activation and multi-thousand-hour battery runtimes are worth weighting heavily, since a dead battery on a pure red dot means a dead sight picture. Mount height and co-witness. Most AR-15s need a riser or a taller base to bring the optic up to eye level with a proper cheek weld, since the rifle's sight line sits higher than a lot of other platforms. Weight and durability. The optic that survives recoil, drops, and rough handling matters more in practice than the one that reads best on a spec sheet. A slightly heavier, genuinely rugged optic beats a lighter one that loses zero the first time the rifle gets bumped.

On budget, spend where the use case actually needs it. A basic red dot for a home-defense gun doesn't need to be the most expensive one on the shelf. An LPVO is a different story.
